Check List
Review your child’s schedule, is it what you expected? Every student needs six classes, PE, and lunch.
Encourage your child to explore different careers. This can happen in several easy ways: ask questions of family members and friends, visiting
with adults while at work, using the internet or library resources.
Talk about all aspects of college: academics, athletics,
volunteering, meeting new people, exploring options
Take advantage of the local college facilities: libraries, field
houses, theaters, etc.
Sign up for the PLAN and the PSAT (preliminary college entrance
exams) usually given at your high school in October
Discuss high school course selections with your child and
his/her guidance counselor. Are they
meeting your college/career requirements?
Keep track of honors and awards received throughout high school
(they will need this information when they apply for scholarships later on)
Encourage your son or daughter to do something over the summer –
anything!! Work, volunteer, college
enrichment programs, summer school (if necessary)
