Principal's Message
3/24/08 - Greetings and Happy Spring! It is hard to believe that we only have a few months of school remaining this year. At this time we are in the beginning stages of organizing review for the end of year assessments for our students. Regents exams this year are from 6/17 - 6/26. A comprehensive listing of all exams and times can be found by clicking here.
As we are now into the 5th marking period it is a great time for all of us to provide encouragement for our students learning efforts. With that, I hope that you and your child will be able to look at his/her grades and progress in class. If your child is struggling please feel free to contact his/her teacher for additional information. A contact list for all staff can be found on the staff link to the left.
In an effort to assist students with a well-balanced experience at SCHS, all staff members are constantly seeking opportunities for our students to decompress their various stress levels yet share the importance of an everyday commitment to academics. Whether it be sports, after school clubs, dances, spirit weeks, or programs implemented by the Student Council such as a HS Fun night (time TBA), we look to constantly support opportunities for our students to expend some energy and have a healthy appreciation for school. We look forward to continuing to enrich all students’ educational experiences.
“What You do Matters” Update
As we continue with our school-wide theme this year, I would like to spend a few moments discussing cybersafety, specifically social networking. This is a rising concern among school communities. Sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Bebo, Stickcam, Friendster, etc… are used by a number of our students to communicate with their peers. I recently attended a safe schools conference sponsored by the Buffalo Bureau of the Secret Service with our school resource office (SRO), Deputy Nedza. One of the sessions was on cybersafety in which many interesting and eye-opening facts were shared.
According to Wolak, Mitchell, and Finkelhor in their work, Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later, 2006. A survey of 10 to 17 year olds revealed 34% had posted their real names, telephone numbers, home addresses, or names of their schools online where anyone could see; 45% had posted their dates of birth or ages; and 18% had posted pictures of themselves.
As we continue with our school wide theme “what you do matters” our final student assembly of the year will focus on the dangers of social networking and the long-term ramifications of posting personal information online. For more information on cybersafety, please see the High School section in the April edition of the Rambling Reporter.
