Reading Initiative

Read Every Night

Reading on a nightly basis is the key to our students’ academic success at Southern Cayuga.  The Emily Howland faculty is committed to the ‘Got Book’ initiative and pledges to provide each and every student new material on a daily basis to be read at home and returned to the classroom the following day.   Through this initiative, students will have access to leveled reading material that is appropriately matched with their particular reading ability.

Research shows that literacy rates for students increase exponentially as they read regularly.  Reading for content is important for education, but reading for fun increases the likelihood that students will engage in reading for at least 15 minutes per day.  As literacy rates increase, student understanding across all curriculums is likely to increase.

A new reading room has been placed at each end of the Emily Howland wing, one serving grades PK-1 and the other serving grades 2-6.  Over the summer, thousands of leveled books have been added to our collective reading rooms, enough to send students home every night with a new selection.  Our goal is to have every student read for 15 minutes every night.  We ask all parents to support their child’s reading at home and to celebrate their growth as readers.  Please also keep reading to your children, as the more your children hear what fluent reading should sound like, the better!
