Congratulations to Evan Sheils on capturing the Section 4 Division II title at 144 pounds!
Wrestling for Lansing Bobcats through the Lansing–Southern Cayuga sports merger, Sheils has put together an outstanding 2025–26 campaign. Entering the state tournament, he holds an impressive 29–3 overall record and was ranked second in Section IV Division II.
Sheils’ postseason run began on February 7 at the Section 4 Class B Qualifier in Newark Valley, where he was seeded second. He opened the tournament with a pin over No. 7 seed Trevor Wells of Moravia in the quarterfinals, followed by another pin against No. 3 seed Brendan Gumaer of Marathon in the semifinals. Sheils advanced to the finals before falling to top-seeded Justin Somers of Walton-Delaware Academy, earning valuable momentum heading into sectionals.
At the Section 4 Championships on February 14, Sheils once again entered as the No. 2 seed, and this time, he finished on top. He pinned No. 7 seed Brendan Gumaer of Marathon in the quarterfinals and secured a 4–0 decision over No. 6 seed Caden Bradley of Tioga in the semifinals. In a highly anticipated rematch, Sheils defeated No. 1 seed Justin Somers of Walton-Delaware Academy by a commanding 7–0 decision to claim the Section IV Division II championship at 144 pounds.
The sectional title marks a significant milestone in Sheils’ wrestling career and reflects his hard work, dedication, and determination throughout the season. His commitment in the practice room and focus on the mat have made both Lansing and Southern Cayuga proud.
Sheils will next compete at the NYSPHSAA State Championships, held Friday, February 27 through Saturday, February 28 at MVP Arena in Albany. He enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the state bracket.
