NYS Coaching Certification
Southern Cayuga CSD is committed to providing quality coaching for our sports teams. The New York State Education Department provides certification guidelines for coaching. These guidelines are followed by school districts to ensure the safety and well-being of the student athletes. If you are interested in coaching at the inter-scholastic level the following documents will assist you in this process.

In order to coach (paid or unpaid) in the Southern Cayuga CSD you will need to have the initial applicant steps 1-9 completed prior to BOE appointment.
_____ Step 1 Coaching Application or Volunteer Application filled out and turned into the Athletic Department.
_____ Step 2 Apply on TEACH. This is a NYS online system for tracking licensure. If this is your first time in the system for coaching, you are looking for a temporary certification in coaching. The system tracks all of the above submitted documents and more. There is an annual $50.00 fee paid online for this service for each sport requested at: www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach. If you coach a sport for 3 consecutive years, you may become eligible to apply for the professional certificate (updated every 3 years).
_____ Step 3 Fingerprinting Fee paid online. Please go to the following link for details and cost: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tsei/ospra/
_____ Step 4 Take an approved Coaches Concussion Course. Provide certificate to AC. There is a free online course at the following link: Concussion in Sports Course (www.nfhslearn.com) Update every 2 years.
_____ Step 5 Take a Child Abuse Prevention Workshop as coaches are mandated reporters. The 2 hour course can be taken free online: http://www.nysmandatedreporter.org/. Provide copy to AC.
_____ Step 6 Secure current CPR/AED certification by a NYS approved provider. Provide a copy to the AC. Swim coaches require water safety course updates every year, others are biannual.
_____ Step 7 Get a current First Aid for Coaching or RTE certification card. Courses taken from the American Red Cross must be a “Responding to Emergencies Course.”Provide certificate to AC. Retake every 2-3 years according to expiration on card or certificate.
_____ Step 8 Take a Violence Prevention Workshop. This is also known as S.A.V.E “Safe Schools Against Violence in Education” Workshop. Provide certificate to AC.
_____ Step 9 Take DASA Training (Dignity for All Students Act). Provide certificate to AC.
_____ Step 10 BOE Approval
Applicants must complete the following requirements within the next two years in order to apply for a Professional Certificate. Non teacher coaches have 5 years to complete the courses below.
Applicants will continue to pay the coaching renewal fees for each sport until satisfying the requirements for the professional certificate. An alternate option for taking the individual coaching course below is to take the online Accredited Interscholastic Coach (AIC-Level 1) course through NFHS.

_____ Step 12 First Aid, Health and Safety - https://nfhslearn.com/home/coaches - Provide certificate to AC.
_____ Step 13 Satisfactory Evaluations – Sport Specific for 3 years.
_____ Step 14 Professional Cert - Submit maintained CPR/AED, First Aid, DASA, concussion workshop to Athletic Department and BOCES and a professional coaching license can be requested on the TEACH system. If all classes and requirements listed above are in order. The professional license must be updated every 3 years.
