Southern Cayuga CSD Construction Update

The SCCS Planetarium project is well under way.  Initial work within the planetarium focused on the demolition of interior ceilings and the classroom floor, along with the dismantlement of all major mechanical systems.   The 2018 voter approved project is on track to be completed by June 2019, several months ahead of schedule.   Now that the demolition portion of the project is complete, the installation of the new heating and ventilation systems can proceed, along with the replacement of the ceiling, lights, and floor in the planetarium classroom.  The new STEM classroom will host our expanding robotic and computer coding programs in the fall.

In addition, the installation of a new cafeteria floor took place over the recent February break.

As we look ahead, the district will soon begin the 2020 building conditions survey.  The survey is a professional inspection conducted by architects and engineers to ensure oversight of all district buildings and facilities.  The survey is conducted every five years and serves as the basis of our SCCS Long-Range Facilities Plan.  The next major phase of renovation work will take place in a couple of years and mainly focus on high school sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots.

In anticipation, the district will propose (May 2019) the creation of a new capital reserve for a term of ten years.  Our current capital reserve is slated to expire and existing funds would be transferred to this new reserve.  Planning ahead will allow the district to propose future capital projects with little or no impact on our local debt share expense and to take full advantage of the 81.2% building aid reimbursement rate from the state.
